A Natural Institution
Marriage is a practice common to all cultures in all ages. It is, therefore, a natural institution, something common to all mankind. At its most basic level, marriage is a union between a man and a woman for the purpose of procreation and mutual support, or love. Each spouse in a marriage gives up some rights over his or her life in exchange for rights over the life of the other spouse.
While divorce has existed throughout history, it has been rare until recent centuries, which indicates that, even in its natural form, marriage is meant to be a lifelong union.
The Elements of a Natural Marriage
According to Pocket Catholic Dictionary, there are four elements common to natural marriage throughout history:
- It is a union of opposite sexes.
- It is a lifelong union, ending only with the death of one spouse.
- It excludes a union with any other person so long as the marriage exists.
- Its lifelong nature and exclusiveness are guaranteed by contract.
A Supernatural Institution
In the Catholic Church, however, marriage is more than a natural institution; it was elevated by Christ Himself, in His participation in the wedding at Cana, to be one of the seven sacraments. A marriage between two Christians, therefore, has a supernatural element as well as a natural one. While few Christians outside of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches regard marriage as a sacrament, the Catholic Church insists that marriage between any two baptized Christians, as long as it is entered into with the intention to contract a true marriage, is a sacrament.

Pre-Cana Program
The Diocesan Pre-Cana Program is designed to provide an opportunity to discuss openly with each other your strengths and weaknesses and to share quality time together. A married couple lead the experience. The presenting couple will share their experiences and present the teachings of the Catholic Church on issues related to the Sacrament of Matrimony. The Weekend program is held either in a parish or at the Diocesan facilities in Brooklyn or Queens, and you can register for the Pre-Cana class that best fits your situation.

Una institución natural
El matrimonio es una práctica común a todas las culturas en el mundo. Por lo tanto, es una institución natural, algo común a toda la humanidad. En su nivel más básico, el matrimonio es una unión entre un hombre y una mujer con el propósito de procreación y apoyo mutuo, o amor. Cada cónyuge en un matrimonio renuncia a algunos derechos sobre su vida a cambio de los derechos sobre la vida de su cónyuge.

En la Iglesia católica, sin embargo, el matrimonio es más que una institución natural; fue elevado por Cristo mismo, en su participación en la boda en Caná, a uno de los siete sacramentos. Un matrimonio entre dos cristianos, por lo tanto, tiene un elemento sobrenatural además de uno natural. Pocos cristianos fuera de las iglesias católica y ortodoxa consideran el matrimonio como un sacramento; pero la Iglesia católica insiste en que el matrimonio entre dos cristianos bautizados, siempre que se celebre con la intención de contraer un matrimonio verdadero, es un sacramento.
